Freedom to Unplug
A reminder that the greatest freedom might just be the chance to slow down and truly connect.
Sorry if you actually missed a Five4Friday from me last week. It had been forever since I missed a week.
Last week, I did something I don’t do nearly enough: I unplugged.
No email. No Slack. No calendar invites. Just my wife, our two kids, and a beach house on Fripp Island.
We swam. We played. We talked. We laughed. We argued about pool or beach. We got sunburned. We made memories. And we made a lot of laps around that island on a golf cart.
We also take super awkward family photos (except Heather… she looks awesome 😘)
It reminded me that the freedom we talk about every 4th of July isn’t just political or historical, it’s personal too. It’s the freedom to slow down, to step back, and to really see the people closest to us.
So tonight, we’re heading to a cookout with friends, with grilled burgers, kids swimming in a pool, and maybe even some fireworks. And tomorrow, we’ll be out on the lake with family, soaking up one more day together before the busyness resumes.
If you’ve been grinding nonstop, maybe this long weekend is your moment to disconnect in order to reconnect.
Wishing you a safe, joyful, and fully present 4th of July.
I'll be back next week with your regularly scheduled reading but if you need a little more today my Independence Day article from last year ain’t that bad.
